Most types of engineered wood flooring have at least three layers beneath the hardwood veneer.

The top layer though is actual hardwood. This top layer is what you ll see once the flooring is installed and is commonly referred to as a wear layer one may choose engineered over solid hardwood flooring because the cross layers of engineered flooring allow this type of hardwood construction the ability to be installed in more areas of the home including below grade levels basements and over radiant heat. Made up of layers of ply topped with a solid wood lamella or top layer engineered wood flooring is highly resistant to expansion and contraction even when exposed to pretty extreme fluctuations in temperature and moisture. The top layer of hardwood also known as the hardwood veneer ranges in thickness from 0 5 mm to upwards of 6 mm.

Sometimes the top of a staircase has an unfinished opening that permits a cross section view of the entire floor. Fitting was relatively easy but you definately need 2 people and a 3rd on standby to help out for a standard 4x4 room to elaborate you need to fit each. However the end result is less than impressive when compared to a real wood floor. Even if the stairs are fully finished you can get an approximate reading of the stairs thickness by measuring the distance from the top of the riser to the top of the finish flooring.

This innovative technology makes engineered flooring an excellent option for areas where temperature and humidity changes often occur such as your kitchen conservatory or basement. A smooth veneered top layer of solid wood is bonded to under core base layers to offer advanced stability and resistant properties over those of solid wood flooring. More layers provides greater stability. Some options have as many as five to seven layers.

Most of the flooring from harris wood has a top layer of around 2mm which makes it a good option if you re on a tight budget but still want a floor that will last a while. Made from three different layers including a solid oak top layer this flooring is incredibly hardwearing and stable. Laminate is cheaper when bought in bulk though which is a consideration factor.
